New York Search & Rescue

UNIFORM REGULATIONS

Requirements:

Members are required to wear the uniform as defined below.  Patches, decorations
or alterations not specifically authorized in this regulation are unauthorized.

The uniform shall not be worn to imply endorsement of any product or candidate
for political appointment without the consent of the Executive Board.

-	Members shall furnish their own uniforms.
-	Members are responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of their uniform.
-	The size and fit of the uniform should be appropriate and replaced as needed.
-	Uniforms should not be dirty, discolored, frayed or torn.
-	Shirts and pants must match in color and style.
-	All stickers, pins and patches on any uniform item must meet uniform
      regulations.
-	Adjustments to uniform wear shall be made for members with medical conditions.


Primary Uniform:

Pants

Navy blue pants meeting one of the following criteria:

1.  EMS / ESU style
    a.  Six pocket EMS style pants which have 2 front pockets, two rear
        pockets with cover flaps and two cargo style pockets on the legs.
    b.	Eight pocket style pants are as described above with the addition of
        two smaller front pockets.
    c.	Pants should not be worn tucked into the boots unless operating in field
        conditions.
2.  BDU style
    a.	Six pocket style pants which have 2 front pockets, two rear pockets
        with cover flaps and two cargo style pockets on the legs.
		b.  Pants shall be worn tucked into the boots.

Belt

A black or navy blue belt with an open face buckle shall be worn.  Emergency rappel
or riggers style belt is acceptable.


Shirt

Navy blue shirt meeting one of the following criteria:

1.  A tuck in style shirt, with or without epaulets, long or short sleeve, must be
    worn when wearing the EMS / ESU style pants, described above.  Sleeves may be
    rolled up in military fashion only with the BDU style, two pocket, shirt.

2.  A BDU un-tucked style shirt with four pockets must only be worn when wearing
    the BDU style pants, described above.


T-Shirt

A navy blue t-shirt, without pockets, shall be worn under the uniform.  It may have
the words "SEARCH & RESCUE" or "NEW YORK SEARCH AND RESCUE", in white letters,
silk screened onto the back and/or front.  Affixed to the front left chest area may
be the NYSAR patch or the NYSAR logo, silk screened in full color or white ink.


Boots

Black boots must be worn.


Patches

All patches shall be permanently affixed to uniforms.

Patches specific to NYSAR include all name patches and both large and small NYSAR
patches.  They are described as follows:

Uniform Style Shirt:

     Name: navy blue or black background, embroidered border in navy blue or black,
     with white embroidered lettering spelling out your last name.  Optional on this
     patch is your first initial, next to your last name.  Also optional is your
     NYSAR ID number, directly below your name.  See example, below.

     Organization (large): navy blue or black background, embroidered border in navy
     blue or black, with white embroidered lettering spelling out New York Search
     & Rescue.  See example, below.

     Organization (small): navy blue or black background, embroidered border in navy
     blue or black, with white embroidered lettering spelling out New York Search &
     Rescue.  See example, below.



BDU Style Shirt:

     Name: borderless cloth tape, navy blue background with white embroidered
     lettering spelling out your last name.  Optional on this patch is your first
     initial, next to your last name.  See example, below.  This style name tape is
     identical in style to the military style name tapes.

     Organization (large): navy blue or black background, embroidered border in navy
     blue or black, with white embroidered lettering spelling out New York Search &
     Rescue.  See example for Uniform Style Shirt, above.

     Organization (small): borderless cloth tape, navy blue with white embroidered
     lettering spelling out "NYSAR".  See example, below.  This style organization
     tape is identical in style to the military style organization tapes.

As an alternative, you may wear the uniform shirt style patches on the front of the
BDU style uniform as long as both the name patch and the organization patch are of
the same style.  ie. You cannot wear a name tape and an organization patch.



Patches shall be worn in the following manner:

Mandatory on shirts:

Left sleeve: NYSAR patch, centered on sleeve, 1" down from the shoulder seam.

     Back: Large New York Search and Rescue patch, centered on back, top edge
           parallel to and aligned with the middle of shoulder blades.

     Front right, centered directly over pocket, patch with your last name.
           If wearing the BDU style tape, it shall be centered over the pocket and 
           left / right edges of tape shall align to left / right edges of shirt
           pocket.  Tip: do not cut tapes--fold the edges under.

Optional on uniform shirts:

     Front right, centered directly over pocket, organization patch.  If wearing
           the BDU style tape, it shall be centered over the pocket and left /
           right edges of tape shall align to left / right edges of shirt pocket.
           Tip: do not cut tapes--fold the edges under.

     Right sleeve: centered on sleeve, 1" down from the shoulder seam, choice of 
           one (1) of the following:

		1.  Medical qualification patch (EMT, CFR, CPR, etc.)
		2.  National Association of Search and Rescue SAR Tech Patch.
                (* Note that this combination is actually two patches: one is a
                rocker style patch while the other is a round NASAR patch worn
                immediately below it.)
		3.  New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Search
                and Rescue qualification patch.

     Right sleeve: reversed US Flag, centered on sleeve, 1" below shoulder seam 
           or other patch described above.


Safety Vest

A safety vest must be obtained and available at all times.  It shall be 
international orange or fluorescent green in color.  It shall have reflective 
strips or artificial illumination (i.e. chemical lights or LED style blinkers)
attached when worn during nighttime hours.  Blinkers shall not be of the strobe
type or interfere with other members' vision.

Any patch approved for wear with any NYSAR uniform may be worn on the safety vest.
Additionally, the U.S. Flag patch may also be worn.


Optional uniform items

Navy blue turtleneck.  The turtleneck may be embroidered or silk screened with
"NYSAR" on the collar in white letters.  

A navy blue baseball style hat.  It may have the words "New York Search & Rescue"
embroidered or silk screened onto the front in white letters, using the format
previously described in patches.  It may have your last name embroidered or silk
screened onto the back.

A navy blue or black knit style hat, which conforms to the shape of the head.

A navy blue or black balaclava style head cover.

A navy blue "boonie" style hat may be worn when in the field.

A helmet that meets current national protective standards for the activity you
are participating in.  It may not be adorned with any unauthorized stickers or
logos.  Currently authorized adornments include lighting; reflective stickers
that do not convey any message, logo or symbol; stickers with the words "Search
& Rescue", "New York Search and Rescue", "NYSAR" or any combination thereof;
your name in any style.

A navy blue pullover "job style" shirt, a navy blue fleece style shirt, a navy
blue polo style shirt or a navy blue windbreaker style jacket may be won.  It
shall be worn consistent with all the uniform shirt regulations except that
NYSAR specific patches may be directly embroidered or silk screened onto the
shirt/jacket.

Different color t-shirts and vests may be authorized by the NYSAR Incident
Commander and shall conform to similar t-shirt and vest requirement outlined
in this regulation.

Inclement / foul weather gear may be of any color and style but must be worn
with the safety vest over it.  However, permanently affixed adornments must
not be offensive in nature.
